The management of the Lagos State University (LASU) Wednesday reinstated members of the university chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) sacked by the immediate past administration, amid jubilation at the main campus of the institution.
The reinstatement followed the approval of the university’s Governing Council to recall the five sacked union leaders of the union.
The Governing Council was said to have taken the decision following the recommendations of the Appeal Committee, headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Boyo.
The reinstated union leaders include ASUU-LASU Chairman, Dr. Akinloye Isaac Oyewumi; Vice Chairman, Dr. Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu; Secretary, Dr. Anthony Dansu; Assistant Secretary, Dr. Adeolu Oluwaseyi Oyekan and Treasurer, Dr. Oluwakemi Aboderin-Shonibare.
The Governing Council led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo, and the immediate past Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, had sacked the five ASUU-LASU leaders on allegations of unauthorised removal, retention and dissemination or publication of official confidential documents in September 2017 and September, 2019.
The decision was condemned and criticised by some sections of the university and the national body of ASUU, who accused the management of victimisation of the affected lecturers.
But, the spokesman for the university, Mr. Ademola Adekoya told New Telegraph that there has not been any official statement to that effect.
“Although the Council met today, where they took some salient decisions. There has not been any official statement on their reinstatement or not,” he said.
However, on assumption of office, the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, set up a committee headed by Prof. Dapo Asaju to look into labour dispute, especially the case of the embattled ASUU-LASU leaders, with a view to addressing the issue.
And, following the recommendations of the Appeal Committee, the Sir David Sunmoni-led Governing Council at a meeting on yesterday approved the reinstatement of the five affected lecturers.
