LASRRA Registers 45 Staff Of New Telegraph Newspapers

Four officials of the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), led by Mr Tunde Atanda, Civic Registration Officer and Mr Omokayode Yusuf, on Monday, registered no fewer than 45 staff of  New Telegraph Newspaper at its corporate office, Daily Telegraph Publishing Company Limited.

The registration, which started around 1:00 pm ended at 5:00 pm.

Commenting on the exercise, the Chairman of the New Telegraph Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ms Oluwatosin Omoniyi, said the registration was a way of ensuring that the members of the association obey the directives of the state government.

Omoniyi, who commended the officials of the agency for volunteering to conduct the exercise, urged other residents of the state to register with the agency so that the state government could know the population of the state with a view to providing them with basic amenities.

“LASRAA is a welcome development in a cosmopolitan state like Lagos. We believe that it is a way of knowing the true population of the state for adequate planning.

“As a union, we believe that our members should cooperate with the state government for development purposes. This is where we live and where our businesses operate, so we must be interested in her development.

“We thank the officials of LASRAA for rising to the occasion and for coming down to our office to register our people without any financial inducement.

“As a union, we will continue to do our best to contribute to the development of the state in our own way,” she said.

Omoniyi however, used the opportunity to appeal to the state government to make use of the demographic reports from the registration to provide basic amenities for the residents of the state.

It will be recalled that the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) is a parastatal of the Ministry of Science and Technology established by Law in June 2011. The primary aim of its creation is to create a reliable database of all residents in Lagos State.

The LASRAA General Manager, Bilikiss Adebiyi – Abiola said the agency is meant to provide a reliable database for the identification and validation of residents’ records while addressing key challenges facing e-governance and other initiatives by providing a more accurate picture for policy planning and resource allocation for the overall development and growth of the State.

She said in September 2019, the upgrade of LASRRA’s IT Infrastructure to facilitate the production of a multipurpose smartcard for all Lagos Residents was approved by the Executive Council in line with the THEMES and per extension THEMES + Agenda of the previous and present administration respectively.

The transition from LASRRA 1.0 which was when ordinary plastic cards meant only for identification purposes were issued to the upgraded one
tagged; LASRRA 2.0, when the smart multi-purpose cards were introduced took a while to manifest due to the emergence of COVID ’19’ pandemic

In July 2022, the Lagos Resident Card tagged: LAG – ID Card was relaunched by His Excellency, The Governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo Olu.
The Agency had a simultaneous relaunch in six locations. The main one was at Police College, Ikeja and the other five locations were at the five divisions across the State; Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe ( IBILE)

To this end, the Agency has been able to record milestone achievements with the conception of this Smart ID card Project tagged – “LASRRA 2.0”. These include but are not limited to the following:

Deployment of Enrolment & Validation portals for timely enrolment and validation processes.

Re-opening and deployment of 62 LASRRA Registration outlets as well as the engagement of Enrolment partners. The involvement of the partners is aimed at achieving a wider coverage of resident registration in the State.

Cloud infrastructure for online real-time enrolment data upload.

Robust backend database infrastructure and solution. Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) deduplication solution to provide unique IDs for all residents.

Application Programming Interface (API) gateway development for secure data validation with public and private sectors.

Development of 28 applet Identity Cards supporting multiple use cases like identity, payment, transport, pension, etc.

Onboarding of Sterling Bank as the pioneer Issuance Partner with a commitment to issue the first 3 million Resident ID cards.

Collaboration with Verve/Interswitch for the card scheme.

LASRRA 2.0 also provides a platform for inclusiveness as other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) can leverage the database thereby enhancing collaboration within these agencies for effective data sharing for better and efficient services. Agencies that have been onboarding include the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), and Ministry of Transportation (MoT) amongst others.

Furthermore, in the last year, there has been improved Quality in Agency Operations.

The Head Office and all operational registration stations across the state have been given face-lifts, while different relevant training sessions have been organized for different categories of staff to make sure that effective and efficient service delivery is achieved.
