Hon. Adewale Temitope, member representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 01 at the Lagos State House of Assembly has provided 750 glasses and 50 free cataract surgeries for his constituents.
The three-day event, which kicked off on Thursday at the Constituency Office, Unity Centre, aimed at improving eye health and also included the distribution of essential medications.
New Telegraph reports that no fewer than 250 residents of the constituency were attended to on Day 1 of the pragramme.
Hon. Adewale, who is a longtime advocate for accessible healthcare, emphasised the importance of vision health during his visit.
“Clear vision is crucial for every aspect of life, from education to daily tasks. By providing these glasses and surgeries, we aim to enhance the quality of life for our people.
“We initially penned the free cataract surgery for 20 people. However, based on the turnout and feedback from the ophthalmologists, we have decided to increase the number to 50 to accommodate more people,” he said.
Those in need of corrective lenses received glasses on the spot, while individuals with cataracts were scheduled for surgery. Additionally, medications for various eye conditions were distributed to ensure continued eye health.
Speaking with newsmen during the programme, many beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the programme.
Mrs Tinu Olayemi, a recipient of the free cataract surgery, shared her relief and appreciation. “I had been struggling with my vision for years and couldn’t afford the surgery. This programme has given me a new lease on life,” she said.
Hon Adewale also had his eyes checked while he was also presented with a pair of free medical glasses.
However, the three-day programme which commenced on Thursday, July 25 continues on Friday and Saturday.
