Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on Friday appealed to Nigerians to work closely with the military to address the country’s growing security challenges.
Speaking at an event at the University of Ibadan’s Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, Lagbaja, represented by Maj.-Gen. Obinna Onubogu, emphasized that security is a collective responsibility.
He called for improved cooperation between civilians and the military to tackle threats such as terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
The COAS further stressed that Nigerians have a role to play by being vigilant, reporting suspicious activities, and supporting the efforts of the military and other security agencies.
He also commended the resilience and bravery of Nigerian soldiers who continue to defend the nation despite numerous challenges.

He said, “The security challenges we face today are complex and require more than just military solutions.
“We need the support and cooperation of all Nigerians in providing critical intelligence and maintaining vigilance, especially in communities vulnerable to these threats.”
Lagbaja emphasized the importance of a “Whole of Society Approach,” wherein citizens, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders work together to create a secure environment.
He also reiterated the need for stronger border security measures and cooperation with neighboring countries to curb illegal activities and infiltration by terrorists and criminal groups.
“The military cannot do it alone,” Lagbaja continued. “We must collaborate with other sectors, including the government, civil society, and international partners, to address the root causes of insecurity.
“This approach will not only combat immediate threats but also foster long-term stability.”
