…as SUG gives police ultimatum to unravel killer cop
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the Homicide section of the FCID, Abuja to embark on a detailed and comprehensive investigation into the alleged killing of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Kwara State, which occurred on the September 4, 2024.
This is even as the Student Union Government (SUG) of school has demanded an open investigation from the Nigeria Police Force to unravel the killer of their colleague, Qoyum.
The officers involved in the incident have been identified as Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip, attached to the Department of Operations, Kwara State Command and they have been consequently detained for investigation.
The Force Spokesperson, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi in a statement yesterday said the Inspector-General of Police who is deeply saddened by the unfortunate event that has led to the loss of a young Nigerian, expresses his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
He however acknowledged the profound grief and loss caused by this unfortunate act and reassures the family and members of the public that Justice would be served.
It was reported that the 21-year-old victim was allegedly killed during a fuel hike protest by the students last week Wednesday. Qoyum, an ND2 student of Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the Kwara State Polytechnic, was allegedly killed by the Police during a protest in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Student Union, in a statement by its President, Saheed Olalekan Ishola, stated that they were not convinced about the sincerity of the Police authority to bring the perpetrator to justice, despite meeting with the top hierarchy of the State Police Command about three days ago.
The SUG said it has, therefore, given a 24-hour ultimatum to the Nigeria Police Force to fish out the culprit and bring him to justice, adding that failure to do this, they would be left with no choice than to “heed to the pressure of majority of our members/students, who have called for a peaceful, unceasing and unrelenting protest to fight for justice.”
