Following his recent comment labelling the party “dead”, the Kogi State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the suspension of its governorship candidate in the November 11, 2023 election, Senator Dino Melaye.
Calling for his suspension in a statement issued by the party’s elder, Alhaji Ibrahim Dansofo, the Kogi PDP denounced Melaye as a political liability, whose dwindling influence has led to failure at the poll and within the party.
The party criticized Melaye’s electoral performance, highlighting his failure to secure even his polling unit during his bid for the party’s governorship ticket.
The State PDP attributed its current struggles in the state to Melaye’s nomination, which they termed a major misstep that resulted in the party’s weakened position.

The party also accused Melaye of using his position to negotiate personal gains with the ruling party, instead of advancing the PDP’s agenda.
The statement partly reads, “Senator Melaye has become a burden to the party,” the statement read, pointing out that his accusations against the leadership were hypocritical, considering the party still gave him the governorship ticket despite doubts about his electoral viability.
The Kogi PDP called for a reassessment of support for Melaye from notable figures such as former President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, urging them to distance themselves from someone they described as a “big-time liability” and “bondage” for the party.
In a decisive move, the PDP called on the local executive committee in Ijumu to initiate suspension proceedings against Melaye.
The party elders stressed the importance of restoring the party’s integrity by focusing on viable leadership.
Additionally, the stakeholders demanded that Melaye account for the billions he allegedly collected in the name of the governorship election.
They urged the Nigerian public to dismiss Melaye’s recent remarks as desperate attempts from a politician whose relevance has diminished.
