The National Co-ordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima Network in the 2023 general election, Alhaji Muhammad Kailani has urged President Bola Tinubu to probe the tenure of the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Kailani also disclosed that traditional rulers, as well as governors, were equally involved in the theft of the nation’s oil in the South-South and not only the military, as revealed by Asari Dokubo.
Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, Kailani insisted that there was a need to carry out a thorough investigation into the tenure of Sanusi as the CBN Governor.
Sanusi, a former Emir of Kano, was given an indefinite leave on February 20, 2014, by former President Goodluck Jonathan on allegations of “financial recklessness and misconduct” and replaced with Godwin Emefiele.
According to him, the recent calls by the former CBN governor for Emefiele’s release are done not in the interest of Nigerians but to cover up some mess during his (Sanusi’s) tenure.
“When Emefiele was arrested, he (Sanusi) called more than 10 times for his release and we do not know what fears he has that he is running up and down.
“The fight against corruption in the CBN should be extended to the tenure of Sanusi Lamido,” he added.
Kailani, a close associate of both President Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari also decried what he termed the “selective disbursement” of CBN’s Anchor Borrower Fund, designed to support rice farmers, under Emefiele’s reign as the apex bank’s boss.
This was just as he said all stolen funds should be returned to the nation’s account and put into proper use for the “prosperity and development of our economy,” while adding that “we want our children to get quality education and get good jobs.”
He said that oil thieves are not just limited to the revelations made by ex-militant leaders but that they are more.
He said, “Oil theft is not just about the military. It involves some traditional rulers and governors, and it started in 1983. They are very powerful.
“So Mr. President has to stand up, stand on his feet, and be ready to deal with anyone found sabotaging our source of revenue because we operate in an economy. We depend on oil.
“In 2016, former President Buhari brought Anchor Borrowers Scheme to finance key farm produce, including rice, maize, and sorghum. In 2016, we were able to produce rice because the money and farm input disbursed then reached the genuine farmers.
“After that, in 2016, the money stopped coming to the farmers but was going to Emefiele’s brothers to set up industries while the farmers were left in limbo.”
