Demola Olarenwaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has named former President, Goodluck Jonathan as the only southern politician capable of successfully challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Olarenwaju who spoke via his verified X handle argued that Jonathan, who served one term as President, has a unique advantage due to his appeal across the North and his eligibility to serve just one more term.
He wrote, “The only Southerner that can run successfully against Tinubu in 2027 and carry northern votes is Goodluck Jonathan, who has just one more term to serve.”

He further emphasized that replacing Tinubu with another southerner for a full eight-year term would face significant resistance due to ethnic sentiments, adding that many Nigerians now view the presidency through the lens of regional representation rather than governance.
Jonathan, who Muhammadu Buhari defeated in the 2015 election, remains the only former president from the South with the potential for a political comeback under these circumstances.
However, no official word has come from Jonathan regarding any intentions to run in 2027.
