Israeli Strikes On Mosque, School Kill 26 – Gaza Health Ministry

The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza has said 26 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes that struck a mosque and a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, early on Sunday.

The ministry stated that the airstrikes hit Ibn Rushd School and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Mosque, leaving dozens more injured.

According to the Israeli military, the locations were being used as “command and control” centres by Hamas militants.

In northern Gaza, Israeli forces surrounded the Jabalia area, responding to claims that Hamas was rebuilding its operations in the region.

Israel also updated evacuation routes in the north and expanded the humanitarian zone in al-Mawasi, though it is smaller than earlier in the year.

Footage from the mosque site shows bodies and blood amidst the rubble, while the school was engulfed in flames, with rescuers pulling a man from the scene on a stretcher.

Hamas accused Israel of targeting civilian areas, demolishing homes and causing mass casualties.

However, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that efforts were made to minimize civilian casualties, employing precision weapons and intelligence to avoid harm to non-combatants.

The IDF also accused Hamas of using civilian sites for military purposes.

These strikes come almost one year after the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on southern Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken.

Since the conflict began, Gaza’s health ministry reports that 41,870 Palestinians have been killed, with more than 97,000 injured, though the figures do not distinguish between civilians and fighters.

The United Nations, citing Gaza’s health ministry, reported that 187 people were killed in Gaza between September 30 and October 4 alone.

Israel has barred independent international journalists from entering Gaza, complicating verification of information.
