Investigative Journalist, Soyinka Released From Detention

The Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa and investigative journalist, Adejuwon Soyinka, has been released following his arrest by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

New Telegraph had earlier reported that Soyinka was detained early on Sunday, August 25, 2024, shortly after arriving in Nigeria from the United Kingdom (UK) on a Virgin Atlantic flight.

As of the time of filing this report, the reasons for Soyinka’s detention was unknown as he was held incommunicado at the DSS Ikoyi office in Lagos.

The incident caused concern among friends and colleagues, as messages and calls to Soyinka’s phone went unanswered.

When reached for comment, the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya said he was unaware of Soyinka’s arrest and declined to provide further details.

In a new update, Soyinka’s friend confirmed that the journalist had been released by the DSS but his passport was confiscated.

The circumstances surrounding his arrest remain unclear.
