The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, arrived in Benin, Edo State capital as part of preparations for the forthcoming governorship election slated for September 21, 2024.
New Telegraph reports that Prof. Yakubu’s visit to the state on Monday, September 9 is to ensure the readiness of INEC for the election process.
During his short stay in the state, the Commission boss is expected to oversee several crucial activities.

According to the schedule announced by Edo State INEC Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Timidi Wariowei, the Chairman will conduct a mock accreditation at key locations, inspect local INEC offices, and engage with various stakeholders on election security.
On Tuesday, the INEC boss will visit Ikpoba Okha, Egor, Oredo, and Ovia North East local government areas to assess election readiness, with mock accreditation taking place at Western Boys High School and Idia College.
On Wednesday, Yakubu will meet with stakeholders in the election process and visit the Oba’s palace in Benin City.
Thursday’s agenda will see the signing of a peace accord by political parties, aimed at ensuring a peaceful and fair election.
The INEC chairman will also engage with INEC staff and hold a meeting with security agencies to address safety concerns during the election.
Yakubu’s visit shows INEC’s commitment to ensuring smooth electoral operations and addressing security issues, as preparations for the Edo State governorship election enter the final phase.
