IGP Lacks Constitutional Power To Suspend Edo Vigilante Group – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insists the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has no constitutional power to suspend the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) as it is a creation of the House of Assembly.

Egbetokun said at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Stakeholders’ meeting in Benin on Wednesday the outfit had been suspended ahead of the September 21 governorship election.

The IGP said: “I here – by direct all local security apparatus within Edo State to refrain from interfering with election security functions. “Any individual or group engaging in the use of unauthorised security activities would face immediate arrest and prosecution.

“The activities of Edo State Security Corps which have been suspended remain suspended until further notice”.

However, Edo PDP Chairman Tony Azeigbemi in two separate letters to INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu and the Peace and Reconciliation Committee Chairman Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar said they have no confidence in the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Anugbum Onuoha and Commissioner of Police Nemo Edwin-Iwo because of their closeness to the Minister of Feeral Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike.
