Iconic Musician, Onyeka Onwenu Is Dead

Tragedy struck the entertainment industry on Tuesday night as veteran iconic musician, Onyeka Onwenu slumped and died shortly after performing at a birthday party in Lagos.

The 72-year-old singer died at the Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island Lagos.

According to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity disclosed that Onyeka has finished performing at the 80th birthday of her friend, Mrs Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceutical. She returned to her seat and suddenly slumped.

‘When she slumped, emergency service was called, and upon arriving at the hospital she was pronounced dead’ she said

Confirming the news also, top entertainment media guru, Seun Oloketuyi confirmed that the music maestro is no more.

Apart from a successful career in music, Onyeka was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council of Arts and Culture.
In 2013, the Goodluck Jonathan administration appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Women Development Centre.

It is pertinent to note that the history of the Nigerian music industry cannot be written without the mention of the Ageless singer/songwriter Onyeka Onwenu; an extraordinary actress, human rights activist, social activist, journalist, politician and most recent author whose biography book ‘ My Father’s Daughter’ was published in 2022.

Onyeka style of music was different as it often addresses social and political issues; some of her popular hit songs include ‘ One Love’ Ekwe, and Iyogogo amongst others.

It will be recalled in March this year, Onyeka revealed plans to put together a film that will focus on her experience spanning several decades in the industry and plans of working with up-and-coming artists.
