How To Link BVN To Bank Account

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has instructed all bank customers to link their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to their bank account(s).

According to new directives from the CBN, all Nigerian banks are now required to ensure that customers’ BVN is linked to their accounts. This requirement applies to both commercial and microfinance banks.

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) is an 11-digit number used to identify individuals across the Nigerian banking industry.

The BVN ensures greater security on access to sensitive and personal information in the banking system. It was launched by the Apex Bank in collaboration with all Nigerian banks in 2014 to address payment security issues. Customers can enrol for their BVN at any of our branches.

The deadline for this mandatory linkage was set for February 29, 2024, for some banks, while others specified March 1st. However, some banks have already taken action by withholding balance information on accounts that are not linked.

New Telegraph is here to guide you through the necessary steps to link your BVN with any of your Nigerian banks. This process is vital for improving security measures throughout Nigeria.

To link your BVN or NIN to your bank account, you can use one of the following methods:

Additionally, some banks may require you to have an active account or be registered for their mobile banking service to use these USSD codes.

Log in to the internet banking platform of your bank, select the BVN/NIN option, click on new request, enter your BVN/NIN, select the bank where your BVN/NIN was issued, answer the secret questions and follow the instructions.

Simply text BVN/NIN, your account number, and BVN/NIN number to the number/code provided by your service provider or bank.

Ways To Link Your Account To Your BVN/NIN

  • To link your BVN/NIN to your account, you can visit your designated bank’s website and navigate to the self-service portal.
  • Next, toggle the button and select the BVN/NIN link. Input your account details, and the system will generate an OTP code sent to your linked phone number.
  • After receiving the 6-digit code, enter it into the value section and tap “verify OTP.”
  • Following this, follow the steps to generate a captcha and type in the code value presented by your bank to generate a Virtual NIN. For instance, use the format *your bank code*no*NIN*unique bank code#.
  • Alternatively, you can visit any branch of a Nigerian bank where you have a registered account. Bring along a photocopy of your NIN slip and manually write the following details on the paper: Account number, Phone number, NIN, and your generated Virtual NIN. Submit this to your account officer.

If you visit the bank without your NIN slip, you can locate a nearby cafe shop to print it out or send an email with a copy of your NIN details from the NIMC website to your bank to help print it out.

If you are unsure whether your account has been linked, contact the customer care centre of your bank for further inquiries.
