Hezbollah Vows To Punish Israel After Deadly Pager Blasts

Hezbollah vowed yesterday to punish Israel after hundreds of paging devices used by the militant group’s members exploded in a deadly wave across Lebanon.

There was no immediate comment from Israel on the explosions that killed nine people, including the 10-yearold daughter of a Hezbollah member, and wounded around 2,800 others.

Israel had announced hours earlier that it was broadening the aims of the war sparked by Hamas’s October 7 attacks to include its fight against the Palestinian militant group’s ally Hezbollah.

“We hold the Israeli enemy fully responsible for this criminal aggression,” the group said in a statement on Tuesday, adding that Israel “will certainly receive its just punishment for this sinful aggression”.

Yesterday, the group vowed in another statement on Telegram it would continue its fight in support of Gaza while reiterating it would avenge Tuesday’s attack, reports AFP. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah will make a speech at 5:00 pm (1400 GMT) today.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has said he is “deeply alarmed” by reports of exploding communication devices in Lebanon and Syria, his spokesperson said.

“The Secretary General urges all concerned actors to exercise maximum restraint to avert any further escalation,” Stéphane Dujarric adds, noting that Guterres is calling for an immediate “return to a cessation of hostilities to restore stability”.
