H1’24: Over 7.19m Electricity Users Unmetered –NERC

No fewer than 7.19 million electricity users in Nigeria are still unmetered electricity, representing 54.58 per cent of the electricity users.

This is according to data in the June 2024 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) Metering and Customer Service Standard facts sheet of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which was seen by New Telegraph over the weekend.

The report showed that only 5.99 million of the 13.19 million registered customers are metered. It revealed that despite a slight increase in metered customers between May 2024 and June 2024, the percentage of unmetered customers only marginally decreased from 54.61 per cent to 54.58 per cent.

According to the report, Ikeja Electric maintained an outstanding metering performance with 926,270 metered customers out of 1,208,580 registered in June, achieving a 76.64 per cent metering rate.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Abuja DisCo) followed closed with 1,244,240 registered customers in June, from 1,242,160 in May. The registered customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) rose from 770,580 in May 2024 to 773,170 in June 2024, achieving a 56.71 per cent metering rate.

The report showed that Benin Electric had 675,498 metered customers, which is a metering rate of 49.28 per cent. There were 693,946 unmetered customers.

Ibadan Electric recorded 573,063 metered customers which is 40.68 per cent of the total customers while 835,866 were unmetered.

Kaduna Electric, had 203,013 metered customers, a metering rate of 22.91 per cent, while 683,149 customers were unmetered. Kano Electric had 212,720 metered customers while 669,272 were unmetered.

Port Harcourt Electric had 813,710 unmetered customers and 260,891 metered electricity users. The NERC report showed that Jos Electric metered 215,689 customers, while 661,861 remained unmetered customers.

It added that Yola Electric has the lowest metering rate at 15.27 per cent, with 692,900 unmetered customers but only 124,835 metered users.
