A political group, African Reformation Party (ARP), has called for the return to the pre-independence regional system of government, if the nation is sincere about seeing real development and meeting up with other progressive nations.
The group is also seeking a review of the four-year double term for president and governors and instead called for a single term of five years, arguing that a five-year single term is enough for any focused president or governor to make an impact in the life of the people.
Speaking during the inaugural gathering of members of the political group in Lagos, its Convener, Chief Mutiu Kunle Okunola, said these reforms are necessary if the nation is planning to raise its head as a leader in the comity of nations.
The group is also proposing the position of deputy president and six vice presidents from each of the regions of the country and rotational presidency that will guarantee the tenure of five years for any ruling region, irrespective of what happens to the president while in office.
According to them, should a president leave office either through death, impeachment or resignation, the vice president from his or her region should be allowed to complete the region’s tenure, noting that that way there will be stability and certainty in governance.
