Foundation Awards Scholarships To Brilliant, Blind Students In Abuja, Enugu

The MTN Foundation, under the MTN Foundation’s Youth Development portfolio, that recognises and rewards high-performing students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses, as well as Blind students in Nigerian public tertiary institutions has awarded scholarships to beneficiaries of the annual scholarship award scheme in Abuja and Enugu, respectively.

The top 10 scoring candidates of the Unified Matriculation Examination (UTME) also benefit from this yearly programme. The scholarship scheme, which is part of Foundation’s commitment to ensuring quality education and rewarding academic excellence, were officially presented to the recipients during the award ceremony in Abuja and Enugu for the South-East zone.

Each of the scholarship recipients will receive a scholarship grant worth N300,000 annually till graduation as long as they maintain the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which covers tuition, book allowance and stipends.

Speaking at the event, the Director of MTN Foundation, Mrs Aishatu Sadauki reiterated that education is a powerful tool for shaping minds and driving societal change, even as she urged the new scholars to leverage their scholarships to build meaningful connections and contribute positively to their communities.

The Abuja ceremony is for students across various universities in the North, while the Enugu edition is also for students in universities in the South-East part of the country.

According to her, for the past 13 years, the MTN Foundation has been driven by the belief that every individual, irrespective of their socio-economic status, has the potential to be a trailblazer, problem-solver, and visionary.

“Today, we are graduating 380 scholars whose achievements are not only a reflection of their potential, but also a contribution to the development of our great nation and beyond.

They have surpassed our expectations by remaining steadfast and dedicated to excellence,” she said. Under the scheme, MTN Foundation, to date, has awarded scholarships valued at over N2.5 billion to Nigerian students.

At the event were the representative of Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Dr Othman Ibrahim, Deputy Dean of Students’ Affairs; JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, who was represented by Mrs Basirat Agbabiaka; Director of the MTN Foundation, Mrs Aishatu Sadauki; Head of the Department at the Federal College of Education, Bichi, Dr. Anwalu Danlami; Senior Manager of Sales and Trade Development at MTN Nigeria, Mr. Ohwofasa Obazenu, among others.

Also at the Enugu ceremony, the state Governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih stressed the importance of inclusive and quality education for nation-building and development.

“On behalf of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, I congratulate the recipients of this meritorious award and express gratitude to the MTN Foundation for their efforts in encouraging our students,” she said.

While reiterating MTN’s commitment to youth development through education, the Director of MTN Foundation, Mr. Dennis Okoro, said: “We have been doing this for the past 13 years, and unlike any other scholarship, the MTN Foundation Scholarship is designed for those who are brilliant, intelligent, resilient, and hardworking in their studies. “Beyond the financial support we offer, we give the scholarship recipients access to online certifications in their respective fields.”
