Five Dead, Several Hospitalized After ‘Love Feast’ In Ibadan Church

Tragedy struck in Ibadan, Oyo State on Sunday after five persons were confirmed dead, and several others receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo, Egbeda Local Government Area of the State.

Sunday Telegraph reports that the victims had reportedly participated in a ‘Love Feast’, commonly referred to as ‘Ipese’, organized by a white garment church in the Apata area of Ido Local Government.

The incident, which occurred last Sunday, has left the community in a state of confusion and alarm as health authorities and government agencies continue to investigate the cause of the sudden deaths.

According to a source within the church, who wished to remain anonymous, the connection between the feast and the fatalities has not been officially confirmed.

“I ate the same beans that everyone else, including the victims, ate, and nothing happened to me.

“It’s not clear that the incident is related to the ‘Ipese’, as some people are claiming.

Various government agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), media, and even the World Health Organization (WHO), have been here to investigate.

Their findings haven’t been made public yet, but I can assure you it’s not about the Ipese,” the church member said.

In the aftermath of the incident, many of the affected individuals were rushed to the Infectious Disease Centre for emergency medical attention.

Speaking anonymously, a staff member from the centre confirmed that 50 of the victims had been treated and discharged.

However, others remain under close observation and care.

“So far, 50 patients who were brought here for treatment have been discharged, while others are still receiving care,” the medical official revealed.

The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, also confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are currently ongoing.

Authorities, including the police, public health experts, and other agencies, are working to determine whether the deaths and illnesses are directly related to the meal served during the ‘Ipese’ or whether other factors may have contributed to the tragedy.

The deaths have left the Apata community in shock, with many residents demanding swift answers from authorities.

Speculation is rife about the possible cause, though some members of the church remain adamant that the feast itself may not be to blame.

As investigations continue, health officials have urged residents to remain calm and assured them that steps are being taken to prevent any further spread of illness.

The public is advised to await the official findings from the investigations currently being conducted by multiple government bodies.
