A fire broke out at the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road in the Ogba area of Lagos State, causing significant damage to the residential complex.
The fire incident which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 30, started around 2:20 a.m. and it affected a two-bedroom apartment in Flat 5, Block 21—a three-story building that houses 16 two-bedroom flats.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), a preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical surge in the children’s room of the affected flat.

The LASEMA added that the resulting flames completely destroyed the children’s bedroom, leading to the loss of properties valued at millions of naira.
Dr Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident and praised the swift response by the Agency’s Lagos Response Team (LRT), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
According to him, their coordinated efforts ensured that the fire was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading to other apartments and causing further damage.
“Fortunately, there was no loss of life, and no injuries were sustained in the incident,” Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu stated.
He also mentioned that the agency took the opportunity to educate the victims and other residents on the proper use of electrical appliances to help prevent future incidents.
As of 5:00 a.m., emergency personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and the Nigerian Police were still on the scene to ensure that the situation was fully under control and to prevent any possible flare-ups.
