Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has visited Shuwa and Kirchinga in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Sunday to commiserates with victims of flood disaster that wreaks havoc, killing six people and rendering thousand others homeless.
Sunday Telegraph reports that the situation has grounded both social and economic activities as the flood cutoff Shuwa bridge liking Adamawa and Borno States while houses, shops, boreholes, and many valuables were destroyed.
Governor Fintiri who commiserates with victims in Shuwa camp described the situation as pathetic, assuring that government will continue to support the victims with palliative care and other incentives.
He said even though the warning on the flooding from the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET), came late, advocates for a desk officer from the agency who will liaise with the state government to enlighten the masses at the right time.
Fintiri disclosed that the State Government has made moves on the need to building more bridges on the Madagali/Michika highway couple with fixing the bad condition of road in that axis by the Frderal Government.
He reiterated the commitment of his administration to attend to any emerging situation, as according to him government can’t abandon its responsibility of catering for the masses.
The Executive Chairman, Madagali LGA Council, Mr Simon Shashi said the state government has deployed relief materials to the victims, and were being distributed to them at various camps set up by the authorities.
One of the victims, Ibrahim Lawan explained that the downpour came with force from the Mandara mountain and destroyed the areas while many valuables were washed away.
According Ayuba Ladan, Head of Operation Yola office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the communities worst hit by the flood include Kirchinga ,Duhu, Maiwandu ,Jahili, Kokohu, Lumadu, Zhau, Palam, Kwambula, Shuware, and Shuwa.
