FG still trailing 3,906 jailbreakers, says Aregbesola

…says 85 inmates on PG programmes, 4 on PhD

The Federal Government has said it is on the trail of 3,906 jailbreakers who are yet to be apprehended out of a total number of 4,860 prisoners currently on the run. This disclosure was made yesterday by the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, at the weekly briefing organized by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa.

The minister said 954 escaped inmates have already been re-captured just as he assured that the long arm of the law would catch up with those jailbreakers on the run. According to him, the fleeing inmates from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have nowhere to hide as they cannot fully integrate into the society because all their biometrics have been captured and all other critical information needed to exist as full citizens digitally secured. He said “I will like to inform Nigerians that we have captured the biometric information of all inmates in the facilities of the NCoS working in partnership with the Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Therefore, we have the capacity and are tracking all escapees from our facilities. In addition, we are working with and have shared the details of the escapees with INTERPOL, to check the risks of cross border movements.” Commenting on the reformationa and rehabilitation of the inmates, Aregbesola disclosed that 465 inmates are currently running different degree programs at the National Open University of Nigeria; 84 running post graduate degree programs while 4 are running PhD within the Custodian facilities.
