Amid the ongoing dispute between the Osun State Government and Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), a key player in Nigeria’s mining sector, the Federal Government on Wednesday inaugurated a fact-finding committee to resolve the crisis.
At the inauguration, the Federal Government emphasized that mining falls under the exclusive legislative list which means the state governments cannot independently interfere with mining activities.
The newly formed committee is tasked with identifying the root causes of the disagreement.
Also, it will review the contractual obligations between the Osun State Government and SROL. It will also assess the overall impact of the company’s operations on local communities and the national economy.

The committee has, however, been given seven days to submit its findings.
While mining companies must adhere to laws concerning taxation, environmental regulations, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Federal Government retains exclusive authority to regulate and oversee mining operations across the country.
The fact-finding team’s formation is seen as a critical step in ensuring that all parties involved adhere to legal frameworks.
Moreso, this will foster a conducive environment for mining operations to thrive in Nigeria.
The committee’s findings are expected to help resolve the conflict.
Also, it will pave the way for a smoother relationship between state governments and mining companies operating within their territories.
