The Federal Government yesterday appealed to the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to suspend its 7-day warning strike.
The association began the strike on Monday in protest against the abduction of their members, especially Dr Ganiyat Popoola of the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre Kaduna.
The Minister of Labour and Employment Nkiruka Onyejeocha made the appeal before a closed-door meeting. According to her, the government is working to ensure not only the protection and safety of doctors but all citizens.
She said the government is working towards Popoola’s release. The minister said: “The government has been doing a lot to make sure Nigerian citizens are safe.
“The security agencies have been working hard to make sure people are safe in their different workplaces, at home and on the road but of course, the evil of the day persists, and we sympathise with the families of those that have been under siege of kidnappers, we sympathise with those who have lost their lives during this travail.”
