Ezekwesili Calls For ‘Second Independence’ From Domestic Colonialists

Former Nigerian Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has urged citizens to seek what she described as a “Second Independence” from the nation’s poor leadership.

In her Independence Day message to Nigerians on Tuesday, Ezekwesili lamented the state of the country, attributing Nigeria’s challenges to mismanagement by politicians 64 years after gaining independence from Britain.

Taking to her X handle, the advocate for good governance expressed her deep sorrow over the current state of the nation, emphasizing that Nigeria needs liberation from leaders who have failed to manage its resources effectively and have instead impoverished the people.

Ezekwesili wrote, “No matter how the conditions of our country, Nigeria, break our hearts, I often take solace in the scripture- Hope Maketh Not Ashamed. Hope is inexhaustible as I often encourage myself to say.”

Reflecting on her return to Nigeria on Independence Day, she shared a prayer: “Lord support your people’s efforts for a Second Independence—this time from their domestic colonialists who instead of governing for our Common Good have serially chosen to subvert public office for selfish personal interest.”

Ezekwesili concluded her message with a call for resilience, praying that God would strengthen the hearts of Nigerians during these challenging times.

Her message resonates with many Nigerians who are increasingly frustrated with the state of the nation and seeking change from the leadership that has governed since independence.
