There was an explosion at the secretariat of the Action People’s Party yesterday in the GRA area of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, causing panic among residents.
It was learnt that the explosion, which occurred in the early hours of yesterday, was a detonated dynamite, which has been repeatedly used by feuding politicians in the state to settle scores.
The explosion caused serious damage to fixtures and fittings in the building housing the secretariat, especially the ceiling and furniture.
Sources claim that the leadership crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter of the party may be connected to the explosion, which did not claim any life or inflicted injury on anybody.
There have been rumour that Governor Siminialayi Fubara and his supporters are warming up to join the APP, due to the leadership crisis in the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has pitched him against Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the party in the state has described the explosion as an act of terrorism, calling on the police to carry out an investigation to arrest the perpetrators.
The National chairman of the party, Uchenna Nnadi, who made the call shortly after inspecting the building alongside the State Chairman of the party, Sunny Wokekoro, and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, said it was disturbing that the party’s secretariat could be bombed.
