Interim head coach of the England National Football Team, Lee Carsley, has expressed disappointment following England’s 2-1 defeat to Greece in their UEFA Nations League match on Thursday.
Carsley, who stepped in after the resignation of Gareth Southgate, admitted that his team was outplayed for much of the game at Wembley Stadium.
Greece secured the win through Vangelis Pavlidis’ late goal, which came after Jude Bellingham had equalized following Pavlidis’ earlier strike.
Carsley acknowledged the defensive errors that led to the goals, saying, “I think we were probably second best for a lot of tonight … it’s disappointing.”

Reflecting on England’s performance, Carsley explained, “We tried something different, overloading the midfield”.
“We experimented with it and we’re disappointed it didn’t come off. All of the goals came from mistakes … even at 1-1 we were quite fortunate at that point.”
He noted that the team needs to learn from setbacks and focus on their next match against Finland.
“You are going to get setbacks … it’s important we respond well against Finland,” he said.
Greece’s manager, Ivan Jovanovic, credited their victory to the inspiration his players drew from the memory of George Baldock, which helped fuel their determination to secure the win.
Carsley will now turn his attention to regrouping the squad for their upcoming fixtures as they look to bounce back from the defeat.
