#EndBadGovernance: Borno Police Arrest 97 Suspects For Violent Protest, Vandalization

…dismissed soldier, friend for killing Keke NAPEP rider

The Borno State Police Command has arrested 97 suspects for violent protest, hoisting of foreign flags, vandalization, and theft amid the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests across the country.

This was as the command also took into custody a dismissed soldier and his friends for killing a Keke NAPEP rider and running away with his tricycle.

Parading the suspects at the Operation Crack Office, Maiduguri on Saturday, the Borno state Command, Spokesman, ASP, Nahum Daso said “In the nationwide protest the command arrest 97 suspects for violent protest,t theft, mischief and hosting of foreign flag.

“Borno State Police Command under the leadership of CP Yususfu Mohammed Lawal psc has recorded significant arrests, and recovery of exhibits and stolen items during the nationwide protest tagged, “End Bad Governance”.

“The Command while in active collaboration with other security agencies, took proactive measures which was able to curtail and mitigate the breakdown of law and order intended by unguided miscreants who took advantage of the protest to carry out their nefarious acts”, the Police said.

ASP Daso said “Before the protest, while monitoring the cyberspace, Seven (7) Suspects who are social media influencers, were arrested for instigating their social media followers to carry arms and constitute violence across the state and insulting top government officials, clerics and traditional leaders.

“During the protest, 7 suspects were found hosting foreign flags which is perceived to jeopardise the sovereignty of the Nation and a threat to National Security.”.

“While 83 suspects were arrested at various locations within the MMC for vandalizing public and private properties, mischief by fire, rioting, theft and looting of items.

Damages Recorded: Vandalization of WFP warehouse at Baga-road and looting of office and food items. The removal of interlocks, flower vessels, streetlights and pedestrian bridge barricades at Bulumkutu, Lagos Street, Gwange and Baga road, breaking of vehicle glasses and burning of tyres on major routes, vandalizing offices and vehicles at Mechanical village and Looting of items at UNHRC facility Baga-road”, ASP Daso added.

Items recovered according to the command include 2 packs of hilltop tea, 20 pieces of stones,1 Air conditioner,2 Office chairs,7 Flags of foreign flags,3 Bags of NPK fertilizer 1 half bag of weed,1 Sewing machine 30 pieces of blankets, 1 water dispenser,1 set control switch, Ashes of tyres,1 office table Iron rods.

On the case of culpable homicide, the Police spokesman said on 5th August 2024 3 suspects, a dismissed soldier and his two other friends took a charted Keke NAPEP from Anguwan Dubai to Shagari low-cost and lured the 20-year-old rider, James Luka to a quiet area and stabbed him to death with a knife and buried him in a shallow grave ”

“On the next day, on 6th, August 2024, following an intelligence report, two of the suspects were arrested and on interrogation, they confessed to the crime.

“While the other one was at large efforts are being made to arrest him. On the 8th of August, 2024, the body of the deceased was found, exhumed with the help of BISEPA officials and handed over to the family for burial. The suspects will be charged to court after the investigation is completed “, the Police added.

He called on Keke NAPEP riders to always be weary of those chartering their tricycles and report any suspicious person to the police.

The police assured that the command remains committed to ensuring public peace and security through high-level professionalism and quality service delivery and urged the general public to report any suspicious activities within their domain to the nearest police outfit.
