In my previous publication, we made strong incursions into the foray of how to build a robust career portfolio, solid enough to continue to yield returns, both in the immediate period and for the long term.
Like the prime objective of every portfolio manager will be sustained and maximized returns over an extended period of time, career growth and development should also be built on an architectural design or platform that ensures resilience, sustainability and most importantly, returns on investments.
As you stabilize and grow in the course of your career path and journey, you must make that concerted effort to elevate your career offerings such that over time, your returns or earning power continues to drive on an upward trajectory which will finally culminate in career fulfilment growth and improved quality of life.
One of the easier methods to ensure this important objective is attained is to focus on building your Primary, Secondary and Tertiary skills and capabilities.
As you start off on every chosen career path, you must show an abundance of technical capability and skills to authenticate requisite knowledge and skills for that trade and industry where you have decided to pitch your career tent at that moment.
If for example you are a lawyer, accountant, technician, salesperson, etc, you must demonstrate requisite technical skills in that industry, to be able to bring value.
Otherwise, such an individual becomes a misfit and will rather compound problems rather than solve them. This in other words entails having primary skills set for your chosen career path.
In career, as in other endeavours, it has been highlighted that success can be achieved with the demonstration of various skills like critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, negotiation and cognitive flexibility, among others.
However, the place of interpersonal skills and relationship management, otherwise known as social skills, takes a prime position for success and growth to be achieved.
This is very critical for career management and growth. Social skills are the secondary skill which every professional who is desirous of growth in their career journey must cultivate in a robust measure as a build-up on the primary or technical competencies.
At the peak of every career offering in any industry, trade or profession, is the tertiary skills set that sets apart the sharks from the little fries or tilapias. Beyond know-how, those who strive for the peak in their chosen career must also know-why. Tertiary competence is also referred to as conceptual capability.
The capacity for deep thinking and conceptualisation of ideas. As it is often correctly said, leaders are thinkers – deep thinkers at that.
Therefore, to elevate your career to the peak, you need to continually elevate your offering from the primary or technical skills level and daily improve your social and secondary or bridge skills that connects you with people and the outer world of opportunities, and as those opportunities come within reach, you must demonstrate that conceptual capacity to solve big problems because therein lies the big value of returns.
You must elevate your thinking faculty to get to the peak! FasTrack Academy is a one stop knowledge management and skills development Centre.
