Ekpo to Eagles: Focus on AFCON instead of W/Cup opponents

Ex-international, Friday Ekpo, has advised the Super Eagles to stay focused on the next African Cup of Nations which will begin in January instead of getting obsessed with the World Cup qualifiers which is still more than four months away. He said even though the World Cup is big, it is important for the Eagles to shift attention to an immediate assignment instead of getting worried over who they will face in the last round of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. He said the Eagles can effectively use the African Cup of Nations to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers, saying a good showing in Cameroon 2021 will help boost their morale.

“The players don’t need to get obsessed with who their opponents for the World Cup will be; I think their focus should be on the Nations Cup because it is also a big competition and Nigerians will be hoping to see the team do well in that tournament. “It’s been a while we last won the AFCON and I think the NFF’s planning should be on how the Eagles will go the whole distance in that tournament. More importantly, they can use it to prepare for the last round of the World Cup qualifiers because it comes less than two months after the Nations Cup.
