Edo Poll: Obi Condemns Outcome Of Election

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the conduct of the recent Edo State governorship election.

In a lengthy post issued via his verified X handle on Monday, Obi condemned the election process, describing it as a “blatant example of state capture” and a gross undermining of Nigeria’s democratic values.

The former Anambra State Governor argued that the election exposed fatal flaws in Nigeria’s leadership recruitment process, warning that any country with such a compromised system is “doomed.”

“What happened over the weekend in the name of an election in Edo State does not in any way represent the democratic process we chose as a method of electing our political leadership.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Edo governorship election. However, the election has been marred by allegations of result manipulation and voter intimidation.

Obi stressed the importance of the technology-driven election reforms Nigeria has invested in, including the use of the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

He urged the authorities to ensure that these tools are properly utilized to prevent further falsification of election outcomes.

“I urge those in authority not to allow this situation to stand, or depend on it to remain in power,” Obi cautioned.

He warned that those in power, as well as individuals and agencies complicit in undermining the country’s democratic process, should remember that their time in office is not eternal.

The former Anambra governor also addressed the lecturers and officials involved in the election process, urging them to reflect on the role they are playing in undermining democracy. He warned that the damage being caused today would eventually come back to affect the perpetrators and their families.

Obi reiterated his commitment to building a truly democratic Nigeria, noting that today’s politics should not be about capturing power but about saving the country and making it work for everyone.

“I remain committed to building a new and truly democratic Nigeria, which I insist is very possible,” he concluded.
