Barely five days to the anticipated Edo State Governorship election, Governor Godwin Obaseki and leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state on Wednesday announced a grant distribution of ₦1 billion to traders in the state.
Governor Obaseki who made this announcement at the annual event hosted in his honour by Edo market women in Benin City described the financial aid as a gesture of appreciation for the unwavering support market women have shown throughout his administration.
He reassured attendees that the distribution would be conducted transparently, working in conjunction with market women leaders to ensure equitable allocation across the board.

The governor further revealed that should the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, win the upcoming election, the grant amount would be doubled, promising continued support for the trading community.
“I deeply appreciate the loyalty you’ve demonstrated over the years, and this grant is a small way to give back for your unwavering backing,” Obaseki said during his speech.
He also acknowledged the women’s pledge to support Ighodalo at the polls.
In her remarks, Madam Blacky Ogiemen, leader of the market women, commended Obaseki for his reforms and achievements.
She assured the governor of the traders’ continued loyalty, stating that they had already resolved to support Ighodalo in the election, confident in his ability to sustain the progress initiated by Obaseki’s administration.
“The Edo State Women Traders have always stood by the government, and we will remain supportive even after your tenure,” Ogiemen affirmed.
