All seems not to be going well with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Legacy controlled by the suspended Vice Chairman (South-South) Chief Dan Orbih and former Deputy Governor Comrade Shaibu.
The group had opposed the candidacy of Dr. Asue Ighodalo for the September 21 Edo governorship election.
A member of the Legacy Group who pleaded anonymity, said some members of the group are now joining the Ighodalo campaign, and pledging loyalty to the party over individual or group interest.
He commended the PDP national leadership for sanctioning Chief Orbih, adding, “The majority of the members of our group are now with Ighodalo.
“We cannot continue to work against our party in a crucial election. Those of our leaders who remain opposed to the party and the candidate are pursuing their personal interests. They are just fighting an ego war and we can no longer be part of that.”
According to him, the original agreement was to support anybody who emerged as a PDP candidate, but said that some of the leaders were not happy when Ighodalo emerged candidate.
“They did not give us any cogent reason other than they wanted the position. We agreed that we should make some demands and then support the candidate, but to our surprise despite all entreaties, they still remained adamant in working against the party. They are just bitter forgetting that power belongs to God.
“We are members of the PDP and we must remain loyal to our party. The mark of a good party man is that despite the issues, you must put aside personal interest and support the interest of your party.
“As members of Legacy group, if we are indeed true party men, we must put aside every personal interest and support our candidate.”
The source said the action of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) against Orbih, seemed to have boosted Ighodalo’s support as members of opposition political parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP) have joined the campaign.
He noted that the same day Orbih was suspended PDP received thousands of APC and LP members at a rally in Oyomon-Igueben in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State.
He quoted a former APC member, Chief Osaretin Michael telling them that many of them decided to join the PDP to support Ighodalo because he is the best candidate for the election.
Orbih was suspended from participating in all meetings, activities and programmes of the PDP for alleged anti-Party activities while a six-member NWC committee was set up to investigate the matter.
