Ebonyi: Man Docked Over Threat To Life, Theft

Abakaliki Magistrates’ Court 6 sitting in Ebonyi State, has arraigned Oluchukwu John, 44, for allegedly stealing and threatening the life of one David Okorie-Ugbana.

The defendant, who has pleaded not guilty, is on four count-charge of conspiracy, assault, theft, and threat to life.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Lilian Aliede, informed the court that the defendant committed the offences on Saturday, March 30 in Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

Aliede claimed that the defendant and others now at large threatened the life of Okorie David-Ugbana, a male, which made him fearful.

She said that the offense is punishable under Section 86 (2) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33 Vol. 1 Laws of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, 2009.

The Prosecutor also stated that on the same date and location, the defendant damaged a fence worth at N1.4 million owned by Everest Okorie.

“He damaged sharp sand valued at N45,000 property of the same Okorie Everest. The offence is contrary to the laws of Ebonyi state of Nigeria, 2009.

“The defendant also did steal 50 bags of cement valued at N380,000 property of Okorie Everest,” the Prosecutor submitted.

Mr Solomon Eguji, the defense counsel, sought for the defendant’s bail in the most generous terms.

Eguji promised the court that his client would not skip bail and would offer reliable sureties.

He also asked the court to shift the case to the area of jurisdiction.

The Chief Magistrate, Prince Ogboji, granted the defendant bail in the amount of N500,000, with one surety in the same amount and a one-year tax receipt.

“The surety must be within the jurisdiction of the court,” Ogboji added.

The Magistrate also permitted them the transfer of the matter to the region of jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case until May 2, for mention.
