Ebonyi Gov Approves N70,000 New Minimum Wage

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru on Wednesday approved the payment of N70,000 new minimum wage approved by President Bola Tinubu to civil servants in the state.

Governor Nwifuru made the announcement at a press briefing at the New Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital.

Nwifuru clarified that the new minimum wage is not a general salary increment but ensures that the least-paid worker in the state earns N70,000.

He emphasized that this adjustment does not mean an additional N70,000 on every worker’s salary but sets a baseline for wages.

The governor directed the State Head of Service to develop and present a plan for the implementation of the new minimum wage.

“There’s a difference between minimum wage and salary increment. The new minimum wage means what a worker gets as the least salary,” Nwifuru explained.

“As soon as the Head of Service and civil servants agree on the formula and present it to me, we will proceed with the payment,” he stated further.

Governor Nwifuru also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to adhering to the Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for local government councils.

He assured that the Ebonyi State government has never interfered with local government funds and pledged to implement the ruling, allowing local governments to manage their finances and execute their projects independently.
