Earthquake Hits Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula

The Regional Earthquake Monitoring Service has reported a magnitude of 7.0 earthquake at the off coast of Russia’s Far East Kamchatka Peninsula early on Sunday, August 18.

The quake, which occurred at a depth of 50 kilometers, hit around 90 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 7:00 am local time.

The Regional Emergency Situations Ministry reported that tremors were felt along the coast, including in the peninsula’s capital.

Rescue and firefighting teams are currently inspecting buildings for damage.

Initial tsunami warnings were issued by the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center but were later lifted, and local authorities did not issue a tsunami alert.

Several aftershocks followed the main earthquake but were of lower intensity.

The Kamchatka Peninsula, part of the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” is home to numerous active volcanoes and frequently experiences significant seismic activity.
