Defend your budget or face sanction, Reps threaten Farouk

The chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Muktar Betara (APC, Borno), yesterday summoned the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouk, to defend her budget or face sanctions. Betara said the summons became inevitable following the minister’s consistent refusal to appear before the committee to defend the ministry’s 2022 budget.

He said: “Sadiya Farouq, rather than appear before the committee, kept delegating the permanent secretary in the ministry, Nura Alkali, to do this function. “Alkali had made himself available, but the committee was uncomfortable with the minister’s behaviour, making it to reject the permanent secretary’s appearance” He said the committee insists that the minister, who superintends the spending in the ministry, should come forward to give account and not the permanent secretary.

Betara said the committee would no longer entertain the permanent secretary until the minister herself appears before it, warning that failure to do so may compel the committee to invoke the necessary provisions of the constitution to force her to honour the invitation.
