Celebrating Excellence: WSICE Unveils 2024 Essay Competition Finalists

Over N10m scholarship prizes, gifts to be won, says Kareem

The Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange, Nigeria (WSICE) has unveiled the 90 finalists of the WSICE 2024 Essay Competition for Senior Secondary School Student representing a diverse array of talented students from schools across Nigeria writing on “The Many Live of an Irrepressible Patriot, Humanist & Rights Activist.”

In its 15th year, the annual WSICE essay competition has garnered over 10,000 essays written by students, mostly the Senior Secondary Students (SSS) cadre in the 12-17 age range.

It has also conferred over 90 prizes on winners in at least 23 states of Nigeria and 30 winners from five linguistic zones worldwide.

The essay competition is dedicated to youth, and children, emphasising the importance of nurturing cultural un – derstanding and appreciation from a young age.

This this year’s edition, the 15th in the series, of the International Cultural Exchange Programme, which has “EEngaging N-National I-Interest O-On GGood Governance U-Understanding NNation Building” as its overall theme, will be held at Ijegba Forest Theatre, Abeokuta and amongst other venues, the organisers stated.

Also, this year’s scholarship money prizes and gift will be in Excess of 10milliion Naira, disclosed Dr Teju kareem, Executive producer of WSICE programme the last 15years.

The finalists, he said, “have demonstrated exceptional writing prowess, creativity, and insightful perspectives on this year’s theme. Their essays stood out among numerous submissions, reflecting their dedication to scholarly inquiry and intellectual engagement.

“The selection process was rigorous, guided by a panel of esteemed judges who are renowned in their fields. These judges evaluated each submission based on originality, coherence, depth of analysis, and rele – vance to the theme.

While all finalists have already distinguished themselves through their essays, examination of the submitted essays continues to determine the top three entries, ensuring the most outstanding contributions are recognised.”

According to him, each finalist’s es – say not only showcases their individ – ual talent “but also contributes meaningfully to the broader discourse on the theme.

Their perspectives offer fresh insights and thought-provoking arguments that are sure to resonate with readers and inspire further dialogue.
