Brazil Suspends X Operation Till Further Notice

The micro blogging site, X  formerly known as Twitter, has finally been banned in Brazil after failing to meet a Supreme Court deadline to appoint a new legal representative in the country.

The decision, issued by Supreme Court Judge, Alexandre de Moraes, calls for the “Immediate and complete suspension” of the platform until it complies with all court orders and pays outstanding fines.

The conflict began in April when the judge ordered the suspension of several X accounts accused of spreading disinformation, many of which were linked to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

X, however, has been criticized for not adhering to these orders, leading to mounting tensions between the company and Brazilian authorities.

Elon Musk, owner of X, reacting to the ban by accusing Judge Moraes of political bias, said, “Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes.”

The platform, which is used by approximately 10% of Brazil’s 200 million residents, had closed its office in the country earlier this month amid threats of arrest against its legal representative.

The judge has also ordered tech giants like Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores within five days and warned that those using VPNs to access the platform could face fines.

The ban will remain in place until X names a new legal representative in Brazil and pays fines for previously violating Brazilian law.
