Blinken Assures Of Working With China’s Wang Yi To Cub Mideast Tensions

The United Nations (UN) Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured the UN Security Council on Tuesday that he will work with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi to prevent the conflict in the Middle East from spreading when they meet later this week.

Amid rising tensions following the October 7 strikes on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Blinken appealed to the 15-member council for assistance in keeping the conflict under control.

Wang is scheduled to arrive in the US on Thursday for meetings with Blinken and Jake Sullivan, national security adviser to President Joe Biden.

Washington wants to make sure that the two biggest economies in the world, which are engaged in intense competition, do not turn their disagreements over trade, Taiwan, and the South China Sea into a violent conflict.

Blinken cautioned Iran and its allies in the area not to open up new fronts in the fight, saying, “Members of this council, and permanent members in particular, have a special responsibility to prevent this conflict from spreading.”

“When my counterpart from the People’s Republic of China visits, I look forward to continuing to work with him to do precisely that later on this week when he travels to Washington.”
