Biden Signs Bill To Ban TikTok In US

A bill seeking to outlaw the social media app, TikTok has been signed into law by the United States (US) President, Joe Biden.

It would be recalled that the U.S. Congress had previously enacted a law requiring TikTok’s parent firm, ByteDance, located in China, to sell the app within nine months or risk having it banned from the country.

On Wednesday, April 24, Biden signed the bill that was a part of the $95 billion foreign aid package that the US Congress had approved this week, which will increase funding to Taiwan, Israel, and the Ukraine.

TikTok has pledged to challenge the new law in court while this is happening.

In a statement, TikTok representative Alex Haurek declared the rule to be “unconstitutional” and promised to “challenge it in court.”

In 2020, TikTok successfully fought off an effort by former President Donald Trump to force the sale of the company through an executive order that forbade any transactions with ByteDance located in the United States if the company did not sell the app within 45 days.
