Amusan, Adeshina Top 40-Man Team To African Championships

Nigeria’s high jump record holder and NCAA outdoor track and field championship bronze medalist, Temitope Adeshina, along with World 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, are leading the 40-athlete delegation selected by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria for the 23rd African Athletics Championships in Douala, Cameroon, this weekend.

Adeshina aims to become the first Nigerian woman to win the African high jump title, following silver medal finishes by Nneka Ukuh and Doreen Amata. She will likely face fierce competition from Ghana’s Rose Yeboah, the reigning African Games and defending African Championships champion.

The two were recently in a close contest at the NCAA, both clearing 1.97m with Yeboah taking gold on countback. Amusan, the defending 100m hurdles champion, is targeting a hat-trick of titles after victories in 2018 and 2022. If successful, she will join Maria Usifo and Glory Alozie as the only women to win the event three consecutive times.
