Alleged Passport Destroyer Faces One-Year Jail Term – Investigation

A female traveller alleged to have destroyed her standard passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, faces a one-year jail term, upon trial and conviction, investigation by New Telegraph has revealed.

A video showing the unnamed passenger destroying the document had gone viral on social media, compelling the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to invite her for interrogation.

A terse statement signed, yesterday, by the Service’s spokesperson, DCI Kenneth Udo, said her action was in breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveller destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

“The individual has been identified and invited for further investigation. If the allegations are substantiated, her actions would have constituted a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security, and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments”, the statement said.

A senior official, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent on the matter, said the alleged offense attracts a minimum jail term of 1 year. He said: “If tried and convicted, she will be jailed; at least a minimum of one year.”
