The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has appointed Bello Lawal as its new National President.
Lawal, who previously served as the Chairman of Kaita Local Government Area and the ALGON Chairman for Katsina State, was elected during the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held on Tuesday in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
The election was prompted by the conclusion of the tenure of the former National President, Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, whose term ends on October 8, 2024.
However, the transition process was supervised by Chief Odunayo Ategbero, the National Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees.
In his acceptance speech, Lawal expressed gratitude to the NEC members for their confidence and pledged to build on the successes of his predecessor, focusing on advancing the cause of local government autonomy.

“I am deeply honoured by this responsibility, and I assure you all that I will give my very best to further the cause of this great organization,” Lawal stated.
“With the support of every member, I am confident that we can push the objectives of ALGON to a desirable end, especially in the ongoing struggle for local government autonomy.”
Lawal called for unity and cooperation among ALGON members, urging them to work collectively towards achieving the association’s goals.
“I appeal to all members to work together with me to achieve the vision we all share for strengthening governance at the local level,” he added.
Outgoing president Maifata congratulated Lawal and urged ALGON members to offer full support to the new leadership.
He praised the NEC for ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process, expressing confidence in Lawal’s ability to lead the association to greater heights.
“I have no doubt that Bello Lawal will lead ALGON to greater heights.
I call on all of you to give him the same cooperation you gave me during my tenure,” Maifata said during the handover ceremony.
With his new role, Lawal is expected to steer ALGON towards further empowering local governments in Nigeria, a key part of the organization’s mission.
