Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Kanu Agabi yesterday identified the appointment of unqualified people to critical public offices as Nigeria’s greatest problem.
He said this at the 23rd Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture in Lagos. According to him, the country needs leaders with a vision of where they are taking the country.
The lecture is organised yearly as part of activities to celebrate the birthday of the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo.
Agabi said: “The leaders we need as a country must communicate with the people; listen to the people, must infuse a sense of purpose and meaning into the lives of the people. “They must be able to mediate among the various factions that divide the nation and be resilient in a nation as difficult as Nigeria.
“The great necessity of our times, the great challenges and difficulties that we have to contend with, the uncertainties that confront us on every side offer the opportunities for the true leaders to immortalise themselves.
“The true leader must appreciate that immortality is not to be found in material things; the bridges he made or the roads of infrastructure he built because they will collapse, but in the sacrifice made to unite the people and integrate the country.”
Speaking on the need for integration, the ex minister said as long as the country is not integrated or sufficiently integrated, it will continue to have the problem of insecurity and corruption.
He recommended the establishment of a National Integration Commission, whose responsibility would be to propose and implement measures for national integration.
