Olympian, Ahmed Adio, has said although the failure of Team Nigeria to win any medal at the justended Paris 2024 Olympic Games was disappointing, results posted by many of the athletes showed that the country possesses the potential to do well at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
A total of nine athletes made it to the finals in their respective events, including Favour Ofili, Ese Brume, and Samuel Ogazi. Adio, a former Commissioner for Sports in Kwara State, expressed disappointment that they did not win any medals.
However, he said their promising performance bodes well for potential success in the next Olympics. Adio urged the sports ministry to shift focus from the past and begin preparations for the next Olympic Games to ensure Nigeria’s success in 2028.
“All said and done, Nigeria’s outing in Paris 2024 is, to say the least very disappointing,” the former Manager of sports at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) said.
“However, one still sees rays of hope with Team Nigeria, despite not winning any medal, the fact must not be lost that we had about nine athletes in various finals, the question is how do we get them and others coming up to the podium finish in LA ’28?
That I believe should be the major preoccupation of the Sports Ministry instead of the futile attempt to explain failure.”
