Elizabeth Uruakpa, a 66-year-old widow and Assistant Chief Nursing Officer at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan Remo, Ogun State, has regained her freedom after being abducted by gunmen last week Thursday.
Uruakpa was reportedly released on Thursday, September 12, one week after her abduction, and dropped off at the gate of the university by her kidnappers.
The abductors had initially demanded a ransom of N50 million for her release, although it remains unclear how much was paid to secure her freedom.
According to the university’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr Joshua Suleiman, he confirmed hearing the news of her release but had not yet seen her personally.

“I heard that she was dropped at the university gate, though I have not seen her,” Suleiman told reporters.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, also confirmed Uruakpa’s release via her X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the victim is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
“One Elizabeth Uruakpa, a nurse at Babcock UTH, Ilishan, who was abducted, has now been released and presently in the hospital on treatment. Investigation ongoing,” Odutola wrote.
Uruakpa was abducted last Thursday while returning home from a church service.
As she approached the entrance of her residence, masked gunmen, who had been lying in wait, ambushed her.
The kidnappers dragged her out of her car and forced her into their red Toyota vehicle before speeding off.
The incident caused widespread panic in the neighborhood, with residents and shop owners quickly shutting down in fear of further violence.
This is not the first time Babcock University has been struck by violent crimes. On April 19, 2024, Professor Yinka Olomojobi, a lecturer at the university, was shot dead by armed kidnappers at the Ajadeh Event Centre on Iperu/Sagamu Road.
The Professor of Human Rights and Gender Law was reportedly killed for resisting abduction during an invasion by the kidnappers, who also abducted two other individuals, one identified as Dare and another yet-to-be-named person.
