The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, has confirmed the deaths of 25 persons and no fewer than 53 with severe injuries in an early morning auto crash in the state.
The incident occurred at Dangwaro International Market in Kano City’s metropolitan area.
The tourists were claimed to have been transported on a trailer which carried cows headed to the Southern part of Nigeria from Maiduguri.
However, the trailer collided with another truck and overturned.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, FRSC Sector Commander in the state, who confirmed the occurrence in a statement sent to journalists in Kano on Monday said the accident involved a trailer (IVECO) with the registration number XA 311 ZB.
“We received a call at about 03:15 am on July 1, 2024. On receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident to rescue the victims at 03:30 am,” Ibrahim said.

The Sector Commander stated that the accident was caused by high speed, unsafe driving, and overloading, which resulted in a loss of control.
He went on to say that the things retrieved during the rescue operation included six motorcycles, ten mobile phones, livestock (goats and rams), corn, and N400,000.
Abdullahi stated that all recovered things were in police custody.
“All the victims were immediately conveyed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical attention.
“The doctors on duty confirmed 25 dead out of the victims”, he said.
He warned motorists against unsafe practices of transporting animals, goods, along with human beings.
