17 Soldiers: Okoloba Rejects Hurried, Haphazard Approach For Okuama Land ‘War’

The Okoloba Federated Community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State has disowned the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state and said their desire for territorial expansion and aggressive land grabbing will not give peace a chance.

Okoloba indigenes maintained that any hurried and haphazard approach to resolving the matter would fail because they are strangers from Ewu kingdom in Ughelli that have been farmers who came seeking tor safe havens and were given some portions of land by Akugbene community but are now violently claiming ownership.

The Chairman, Okoloba Federated Community, Mr. Clement Koki speaking in Asaba yesterday and who sympathised with the military officers and soldiers that were gruesomely murdered, rejected various concocted stories and deliberate falsehoods by some misguided elements that have stigmatized Okoloba.

He said: “We have studied the various narratives of the string of events that heralded the unwarranted killing of the 17 army officers and soldiers in Okuama in Ughelli and have decided to set the record straight for all right thinking members of the public. “The root cause of the dispute must be explored exhaustively because that is the only sure bet to a lasting peace.

We advise strongly that any hurried and haphazard approach to the dispute will be like pouring water on top of rock, which will not stand the test of time, whilst we strongly wish and pray for peace and prosperity to reign in Delta State and of course Nigeria at large.”

He said various intelligence reports, including the 1945 Commission of inquiry that was set up to look into the root cause of the Akugbene/ Okuama imbroglio, have since listed Okuama as “dissatisfied land grabbers that crossed boundary line with Akugbene into Okoloba land.” He said Okoloba remains willing and ready to support the security agencies, the state and Federal Governments to effectively resolve the long-standing impasse.
